Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge

The Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge

The State of Maryland has one of the most dedicated groups of law enforcement in the nation and the Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge (LEC) is a way to recognize the truly excellent work being done by our uniformed men and women.

Law enforcement plays one of the most vital roles in reducing traffic crashes and the resulting injuries and fatalities. The Maryland LEC promotes competition among Maryland law enforcement agencies (LEAs), while recognizing and honoring those which excel in traffic safety enforcement. The program is coordinated in conjunction with the Maryland Chiefs of Police Association (MCPA), the Maryland Sheriff’s Association (MSA), and the Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO) and is closely related to the National Law Enforcement Challenge sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

The Maryland LEC focuses upon three main traffic safety areas – enforcement of Maryland’s occupant protection laws, impaired driving prevention, and aggressive driving prevention. LEAs are also strongly encouraged to provide information regarding enforcement efforts which promote a comprehensive traffic safety plan, such as motorcycle safety, younger/older driver safety, pedestrian/bicyclist safety, and innovative programs or technologies.

Effective enforcement of Maryland’s traffic safety laws is the focal point of this program.
